Cathay Pacific and Google Team Up on AI-Powered Contrail Mitigation
Cathay Pacific and Google have partnered to advance research on contrails and their contribution to aviation's climate impact. The partnership involves trials of AI-powered contrail mitigation technology, which uses predictive models, satellite imagery detection tools, and weather intelligence to forecast contrail-forming zones.
The trials are being conducted across Cathay Pacific's global network, with a focus on ultra-long-haul flights. Over 100 flights have been targeted, with more than 80 flights following contrail-avoidance routes. Preliminary results indicate that minor altitude adjustments can successfully prevent contrails, with actions taken on one route accounting for over 50% of the trial's total climate impact.
Cathay Pacific and Google are also collaborating to gather real-world data on contrail avoidance in operational environments. The partnership aims to contribute valuable insights to global contrail research and advance understanding of contrail formation and avoidance in the Asia-Pacific region.
