Cathay Pacific and Google Team Up to Tackle Aviation's Climate Impact with Contrail Avoidance Tech

Cathay Pacific and Google are collaborating on a research project to develop AI-powered contrail avoidance technology. The partnership aims to understand the operational feasibility and potential climate benefits of contrailing avoidance across Cathay Pacific's global network.

The companies have started trials, with over 100 flights targeted across Cathay Pacific's network. Over 80 flights followed contrail-avoidance routes, achieving a roughly 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails.

The Hong Kong-Singapore corridor was one of the routes tested, where flights frequently encounter conditions leading to persistent contrails. Early analysis indicates that minor altitude adjustments can prevent contrails, with actions taken on this single route accounting for more than 50% of the trial's total climate impact.
