Cathay Pacific and Google Trial AI-Powered Contrail Avoidance
Cathay Pacific and Google have partnered to research and trial AI-powered contrail avoidance technology. The partnership aims to advance understanding of contrails, which contribute significantly to aviation's climate impact.
Contrails are clouds that form when aircraft fly through cold and humid conditions at high altitude. While many disappear quickly, some persist and spread into broader cloud formations that can trap heat in the atmosphere.
Cathay Pacific has started trials with Google's AI-powered contrail mitigation solution, which combines predictive models, satellite imagery detection tools, and weather intelligence to forecast contrail-forming zones. The trial involves over 100 flights across Cathay Pacific's network, with more than 80 flights following contrail-avoidance routes.
Early analysis indicates that minor altitude adjustments can successfully prevent contrails, with actions taken on the Hong Kong-Singapore corridor accounting for more than 50% of the trial's total climate impact. Google estimates that these flights achieved a roughly 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails.
