Cathay Pacific Joins Google in Asia-Pacific AI Trial to Cut Aviation Contrail Warming

Google and Cathay Pacific are expanding AI-powered trials in Asia-Pacific to cut climate-warming aircraft contrails. The partnership, which includes nonprofit Contrails.org, aims to build on early trials in the U.S. and North Atlantic that achieved a 40% reduction in contrail warming impact.

Contrails, or the thin white lines behind aircraft when flying through humid conditions at high altitudes, are responsible for one-third of aviation's total climate impact by trapping heat in the atmosphere.

The second phase of trials will be conducted across Cathay Pacific's Asian and trans-Pacific network, with a focus on ultra-long haul flights. Google's AI-powered forecasting tools will help identify areas vulnerable to contrails, allowing pilots to adjust flight altitude accordingly.
