Cathay Pacific Teams with Google on AI-Powered Contrail Avoidance System

Cathay Pacific is working on an AI-powered system to help pilots avoid creating contrails, which conspiracy theorists mistakenly call 'chemtrails.' The airline partnered with Google on this project and has already tested it in a small trial run. In the test, flights that used the contrail avoidance plan saw a 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails.

The system uses satellite imagery and advanced weather intelligence tools to forecast areas where contrails might form and suggest altitude adjustments to navigate around these zones. The decision to adjust the aircraft's altitude or routing ultimately rests with the commander, who reviews the contrail avoidance data against other operational parameters within Cathay Pacific's Electronic Flight Folder.

The airline is working on this project in collaboration with Contrail.org, a non-profit organization that estimates contrails cause 1-2% of global warming. Adjusting just 5% of flights could avoid up to 80% of contrail warming.
