Chabad Seeks Court Injunction Over Chevron Cemetery Construction
Chabad's Beis Din Rabbonei Chabad of Eretz Yisroel has filed a petition with the Yerushalayim District Court to stop what it calls the desecration of the historic Chabad cemetery plot in Chevron.
The petition names several Israeli government bodies, including the Higher Planning Council and the Ministry of Religious Services, as respondents. It asks the court to immediately halt construction, paving, earthworks, and other physical changes at the site, which it says is located directly over historic graves.
The Beis Din claims that despite being informed of the situation's severity, the authorities failed to take effective enforcement measures. Rabbi Yaakov Roz'e, a leading posek on matters relating to the sanctity of graves, has ruled that the area contains graves and has the halachic status of a cemetery.
The Beis Din is seeking an urgent interim injunction freezing all work at the site, as well as orders prohibiting further use of the plot and removing existing structures and installations.
