ChatGPT Ads Hit $1 Billion Faster Than Google, Reach $2.5 Billion Projections
OpenAI's ChatGPT ad business has reached a milestone, hitting $1 billion in annualized revenue less than 200 days after launching. This rapid growth surpasses Google's ad business, which took roughly four years to reach this pace.
The key to ChatGPT's success lies in its ability to target users based on their specific needs and preferences, as revealed through actual conversations within the platform. Unlike traditional search ads or social media targeting, ChatGPT ads draw from a person's explanation of what they want to accomplish, what matters to them, and the constraints they face.
ChatGPT's ad business is expanding rapidly, with tens of thousands of businesses now advertising on the platform. OpenAI projects its ad revenue could grow to $100 billion by 2030, up from $2.5 billion projected for this year. The company has also made available a self-service ad system in more than 40 countries, allowing businesses in India, Europe, and other regions to buy ads directly.
Advertisers are already seeing positive results, with one online retailer reporting three times its ad spend back within 28 days. OpenAI's tools allow advertisers to pay only when someone clicks on an ad, track whether it led to a sale, and target specific groups of customers.
