ChatGPT Flags Goldman Sachs Analyst for Threats Against Ex-Girlfriend
OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot played a crucial role in alerting authorities to threats made by former Goldman Sachs analyst Darren Zhou. In August 2026, Zhou told ChatGPT that he intended to kill his ex-girlfriend within a month, prompting the system to pass the information on to the FBI.
The agency then forwarded the material to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in Florida, where Zhou's ex-girlfriend confirmed that she had been stalked. She provided law enforcement with screenshots of the threatening messages.
Zhou was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated stalking, written threats to kill, and unlawful use of a communications device.
He reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced to probation, mandatory electronic monitoring, and participation in a rehabilitation program for domestic violence offenders.
