Chevron Commits to Boosting Gas Utilization in Nigeria's Domestic Market
Chevron Nigeria Limited has committed to increasing the utilization of gas in Nigeria's domestic market. The company, which has spent about $1 billion annually over the past decade on developing Nigerian content, is undertaking new exploration activities in the Niger Delta and partnering with other major oil companies.
In a one-day Oil and Gas Reporting Workshop in Asaba, Chevron's General Manager for Corporate Affairs, Oduselu Olusoga, highlighted the company's partnership with communities in the Niger Delta through the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) model. Under this model, communities determine their development priorities and prepare five-year development plans, while Chevron provides funding and engages non-governmental organizations to support implementation.
Chevron has also contributed to the growth and capacity development of indigenous contractors in the Niger Delta through its activities. The company sees gas as Nigeria's primary transition fuel towards cleaner energy and is committed to increasing its utilization in the domestic market. To achieve this, Chevron has undertaken gas gathering projects, including the Meji and Escravos projects, to reduce gas flaring and make more gas available for domestic consumption.
Chevron's General Manager emphasized that the company remains active across onshore, shallow-water, offshore, and deep-offshore operations in Nigeria. He stated that Chevron's continued presence in the country is anchored on its partnerships with host communities and its long-term commitment to Nigeria's energy sector.
