Chevron Ditches Kurdistan Region, Focuses on Southern Iraq Oil Projects
Chevron is expanding its presence in southern Iraq by moving forward on two major oil projects and joining a proposed pipeline that would carry Iraqi crude to the Mediterranean, according to the US energy company.
The company has abandoned its operations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) since 2025, citing underperformance at the Sarta field and a prolonged shutdown of the KRI's export pipeline. Instead, Chevron is focusing on the southern province of Basra, where it has signed agreements to advance commercial negotiations for the West Qurna (Phase 2) oilfield.
Chevron Business Development EMEA Ltd. and the Dhi Qar Oil Company have also signed an addendum to a Heads of Agreement dated August 19, 2025, regarding the Nasiriyah Field in the southern province of Dhi Qar.
