Chevron Doubles Down on Venezuela Oil Deal Amid Industry Skepticism
US oil giant Chevron has confirmed it will expand its operations in Venezuela, investing over $7 billion over the next five years. The move follows a deal between the US and Venezuela to develop the country's oil reserves, with the Pentagon set to gain a stake in the profits. Chevron currently produces around 300,000 barrels per day in Venezuela and aims to more than double this figure to around 600,000 barrels per day.
The Orinoco Belt is one of the most significant oil-producing regions in the world, with Venezuela holding over 303 billion barrels of proven reserves - more than Saudi Arabia's 267 billion. However, due to energy infrastructure degradation and international sanctions, Venezuela's current daily production stands at just over 1 million barrels.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright defended the deal, stating that it will 'take resources underground not helping anyone' and bring them to the surface to benefit Venezuelans and Americans alike.
