Chevron Drops Out of Federal Carbon Removal Project in Kern County
Chevron has withdrawn from a federal partnership aimed at designing and building equipment to pull carbon dioxide directly out of the atmosphere for burial in Kern County oil fields.
The project, known as the Western Regional Direct Air Capture Hub, was one of five local 'DAC' projects approved for multimillion-dollar subsidies under the Biden administration. The other four were either canceled by the Trump administration or did not make it through negotiations with federal officials.
Chevron's withdrawal from the partnership is a significant development in the field of carbon capture and storage, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.
