Chevron Expands Operations in Venezuela Under Controversial Deal
The US government is defending its deal with Venezuela after Chevron announced plans to expand operations in the country.
The agreement, reached in December last year, allows Chevron and other US companies to resume operations in Venezuela's oil industry despite sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump.
Chevron has said it will restart production at its Petrozuata oil field, which was previously shut down due to maintenance issues. The company plans to invest $100m in the project over the next 12 months.
The deal has been met with criticism from some lawmakers and industry experts, who argue that it contradicts US policy towards Venezuela under Trump. However, the US government has defended the agreement, saying it will help to stabilize the country's economy and promote democracy.
