Chevron Expansion Plans Spark Hope in Venezuela's Oil Sector
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright will travel to Venezuela tonight ahead of an expected announcement tomorrow on Chevron's plans to expand its operations in the country, a US official revealed. This move comes in the wake of a historic oil agreement between the governments of Venezuela and the United States.
The agreement gives the United States a direct ownership stake in Venezuelan oil fields previously influenced by Chinese and Russian corporations. The Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital partnered with a private operating firm linked to Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt on this deal, which secures long-term US energy supplies and allows crude purchases at cost.
The block under influence had an estimated 65 billion barrels of proven reserves, a fraction of Venezuela's total reserves. Officials noted that Venezuela has more than double the amount in reserve, available for further outside investment.
