Chevron Faces Liability for $745M in Coastal Damage

Plaquemines Parish is fighting to hold Chevron accountable for damage caused to its coastal wetlands. The company was found liable in a 2025 lawsuit and ordered to pay $745 million, but it's now trying to have the case moved from state to federal court.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill argued that even if the case is moved to federal court, Chevron should still be responsible for paying the damages. She noted that the company never denied dumping four billion gallons of toxic wastewater in the marsh.

Gov. Jeff Landry also weighed in, saying that Chevron has the money and should pay for the damages. He criticized the company's position as 'taxpayer-funded.'
