Chevron Powers Up AI Revolution with Project Kilby
Chevron's Project Kilby is a pioneering effort to provide dedicated power for hyperscale AI infrastructure in West Texas. The project involves constructing a natural-gas-fired, behind-the-meter (BTM) power plant to supply Microsoft-operated data centers under a 20-year agreement.
The facility will have an initial capacity of 2.7 GW and will be built on land already owned by Chevron. The company's existing infrastructure, including gathering systems and compression equipment, will reduce construction time and costs.
Project Kilby is part of Energy Forge One, a joint venture between Chevron and Joulent, an energy company formed to supply electricity directly to AI-focused data centers. The project aims to provide reliable, dispatchable power for hyperscalers like Microsoft, which requires high-density electricity similar to that used in mission-critical industrial systems.
Chevron's strategy of becoming a direct power provider is distinct from its competitor ExxonMobil's approach, which focuses on supplying decarbonized fuel and carbon-management services rather than building or operating traditional power plants.
