Chevron Pumps Billions into Venezuela's Oil Reserves
US oil giant Chevron has confirmed it will expand its operations in Venezuela, investing more than $7 billion over five years to nearly double production to around 600,000 barrels a day. The move follows an ambitious deal between the US and Venezuela to develop the nation's oil reserves, which contain over 303 billion barrels of crude.
Chevron has been assigned additional acreage in the Orinoco Belt, where it already has a presence. The company's CEO Mike Wirth said the expansion reflects its confidence in Venezuela's deep resource potential and ability to compete for investment within its portfolio.
The White House confirmed that it is partnering with North American Blue Energy Partners as part of the deal, which has been met with skepticism from analysts who say it will take years to revive Venezuela's production, which has been neglected after years of underinvestment.
