Chevron Pursues LNG Expansion Amid Rising Energy Security Concerns

Chevron is expanding its liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio in response to increased demand for energy security and supply diversification. The company's President of Global Gas, Freeman Shaheen, notes that recent disruptions in global energy markets have highlighted the importance of having a diverse supplier base.

The Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 disrupted gas flows from one of the world's largest suppliers, while the ongoing conflict involving Iran has added further uncertainty to supplies from the Middle East. This has led to periods of elevated LNG prices and increased volatility in the market.

Chevron currently expects to have around 20 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) of LNG supply capacity. However, it plans to increase this by further developing its existing projects and exploring new opportunities in regions such as Argentina and the Mediterranean.
