Chevron Richmond Refinery Found to Pose Elevated Health Risks

Chevron Richmond's refinery in California has been at the center of controversy after regulators found elevated health risks to residents living near the facility.

A preliminary assessment by the Bay Area Air District revealed that cancer risks from air pollution exceeded allowable levels, with benzo[a]pyrene being a major contributor. The district's report stated that 'most of the cancer risk, about 74 percent, comes from a single pollutant: benzo[a]pyrene'.

Chevron Richmond has disputed the findings, claiming that the assessment used outdated information and made inaccurate assumptions. The company pointed out that equipment mentioned in the report is no longer operating and does not reflect actual refinery conditions.

The Air District will host a public meeting on September 21 to discuss the preliminary findings and gather public comment.
