Chevron Seeks Major Oil Output Boost in Iraq Amid Global Market Pressure
Iraq has ambitious plans to more than double its oil output in six years, aiming to produce between 8 million and 10 million barrels per day. This would be a significant increase from the 4 million bpd it produced before the war with Iran slowed oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
Chevron has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with the Iraqi government to enter two oil fields in the country, including West Qurna 2 and Nassiriya. The first potential deal would see Chevron assume operational control of one of the world's largest oil fields, which currently produces 460,000 bpd.
Iraq is targeting an initial production capacity of 600,000 bpd for the Nassiriya project within seven years of starting work. While Iraq has several state-owned oil companies, it needs assistance from major global oil companies to provide the technical expertise and capital required to develop its fields to their full potential.
