Chevron Seeks to Nullify $744M Verdict Over Coastal Damage

Chevron is seeking to nullify a $744.6 million verdict awarded by a Plaquemines Parish jury in a coastal damage case.

The lawsuit accuses Chevron's predecessor of dumping billions of gallons of wastewater into Louisiana marshes during decades of oil production.

Chevron attorney Paul Clement argued that the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling makes it 'obvious' that the Plaquemines case belongs in federal court because some of the oil production and refining at issue was tied to federal contracts during World War II.

Louisiana disagrees, stating that the Supreme Court only decided one part of the question and wants a federal trial judge to decide the remaining issues before determining whether the case belongs in federal court.
