Chevron Seeks to Nullify $744M Verdict Over Coastal Damage Claims
Chevron is seeking to nullify a $744.6 million verdict against it for coastal damage in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.
The company argues that the case should be moved to federal court, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made it 'obvious' that these cases belong in federal court because of ties to federal contracts during World War II.
Chevron attorney Paul Clement pointed out that the Supreme Court's decision was unanimous and explicitly stated that cases like this one belong in federal court.
Louisiana, however, disagrees with Chevron's claim. The state argues that the Supreme Court only answered part of the question regarding whether the case belongs in federal court and wants a federal trial judge to decide the remaining issues.
