Chevron Set for Expanded Operations in Venezuela with US Government Backing
The US government is set to announce an expansion of Chevron's operations in Venezuela, according to a US official.
Chevron, the second-largest US oil company, will be joined by North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP), owned by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt, and the Pentagon in this venture. The partnership aims to tap into Venezuela's vast oil reserves and revive the country's production.
NABEP currently operates 17 oil fields with 65 billion barrels of reserves, but analysts have questioned whether President Delcy Rodríguez has the authority to grant the company a 100-year lease.
The US administration defended its decision to partner with Betancourt, who has faced allegations of money laundering in Spain and Switzerland, saying he was vetted and no US laws were violated. However, experts have expressed skepticism about the deal's legitimacy and potential for legal challenges.
