Chevron Surges on Iran-Driven Oil Price Spike
Chevron's stock price climbed 1.6% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after a series of events sent crude oil prices sharply higher. The trigger was Iran's Revolutionary Guard firing missiles at two merchant vessels and striking a third with drones in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies.
The Trump administration responded swiftly by revoking the general license permitting Iranian crude sales in global markets, setting a July 17 deadline for existing transactions to be unwound. This move was seen as a tightening of global oil supply, which pushed oil prices up and lifted energy equities across the board.
Analysts at Wolfe Research had previously upgraded Chevron's shares to 'Outperform' with a $210 price target, citing that the market was pricing in a long-term Brent crude assumption well below the normalized forward curve. This upgrade, combined with the supply disruption and government policy response, contributed to Chevron's strong performance.
