Chrome Blocks Billions of Abusive Android Alerts Daily

Google's Chrome browser is blocking billions of unwanted notifications on Android devices every day. According to Google, its anti-abuse mechanisms successfully block or reduce more than 7 billion unwanted notifications daily.

The company uses a multi-layered approach, dubbed the 'Swiss cheese' defense model, which relies on multiple overlapping security systems including Chrome Security, Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), and Safe Browsing. This strategy ensures that if abuse slips through one layer, another catches it, preventing deceptive content from reaching users.

Chrome's architecture targets bad actors at the permission level with automated defenses such as Automatic Permission Stripping, Seamless Unsubscribing, Safety Hub Oversight, and One-Tap Opt-Out. These mechanisms analyze threat landscapes via broader behavior signals, including monitoring service-worker activity, notification volume, time spent on a site, and aggressive prompting for permissions.

For websites that engage in disruptive behavior, Google applies strict infrastructure-level limits, capping abusive domains at 1,000 notification messages per minute through Firebase Cloud Messaging.
