Google's Chrome has made significant strides in reducing unwanted Android notifications by over 7 billion per day, according to recent data. This achievement is a result of the company's multi-layered approach, which includes permission revocation, abuse detection, sender rate limits, and on-device machine learning.
The 'Swiss cheese' model employed by Chrome involves several defenses working together to filter out unwanted notifications. The first line of defense is the infrastructure behind the notifications, where Chrome can automatically revoke notification permissions from sites that appear abusive or have become inactive.
Additionally, Google uses signals such as service-worker activity to identify coordinated behavior across websites, and its Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) adds another control by rate-limiting high-volume senders. The company has also made it easier for users to turn off notifications without digging deep into Chrome settings.
