Chrome Gives Up on Windows 11 Modern Redesign

The modern redesign of Google Chrome for Windows 11's Fluent Design features is likely never happening. Several Chromium code commits confirm that development has been paused, and the feature will not be implemented in Google Chrome.

Microsoft Fluent Design includes materials such as Acrylic and Mica, which are used in Windows 11. However, even Microsoft Edge no longer uses these traits, instead opting for a Copilot-inspired design language. The Chromium code commits indicate that Google has removed references to Mica, and the feature will be removed from the browser in the coming weeks.

This news doesn't come as a surprise, given that development of Mica for Chromium was already on hold. In 2023, it appeared that Google would roll out the feature to everyone sometime in 2024, but this did not happen. The flag used to turn on Mica later disappeared and reappeared, suggesting that Chrome's Mica title bar might finally happen. However, this is no longer the case.
