Chromecast with Google TV Dongle Users: Check Your Display Settings for a Black Screen Fix

A Google Chromecast with Google TV dongle owner thought their device was dead after experiencing a black screen issue on an old Hitachi 1080p TV. However, disabling one setting resolved the problem.

Steve Larner, a seasoned tech editor and writer, explained that he didn't mind if his device slowed down as long as it worked for streaming content. He replaced his old Philips 1080p TV with another old Hitachi 1080p TV and encountered a black screen issue.

Larner suspected that the issue might be due to the HDMI/HDCP handshake between the TV and the Chromecast or a power problem, but disabling 'Match content dynamic range' in Settings -> Display & Sound fixed the issue. He also noted that enabling HDR can cause problems if the display doesn't support it.

A black screen can be caused by various issues, including HDMI/HDCP handshakes, power problems, or using a soundbar with CEC enabled. Larner suggested turning off settings like CEC, eARC, and HDR to troubleshoot the problem.
