Chrome's Address Bar Goes Rogue: A Floating AI Tool is Coming
Google is rewriting the rules for its Chrome browser's address bar, transforming it into a floating desktop AI tool. The feature, codenamed 'OmniboxEverywhere', decouples the Omnibox from the browser window and turns it into a system-wide HUD that integrates Google's Gemini AI.
The new search bar can be summoned with a keyboard shortcut or launched from a system tray icon, allowing users to access Search, browser navigation, and multi-modal AI from anywhere on their desktop. The bar is powered by Gemini AI and allows for file attachments and screenshots for instant answers.
The feature remembers the user's last-used profile, even after a reboot, ensuring that history, bookmarks, and Gemini responses match the correct account. While still in active development, this new tool promises to change how users interact with their browsers and operating systems.
