CIEN's Premium Multiple Tests Execution as Growth Hits 30%
Ciena Corporation (CIEN) is entering fiscal 2027 with a growth outlook that few networking peers can match. Management expects at least 30% revenue growth as AI-driven bandwidth demand expands across cloud and data-center networks.
The question is valuation, however. CIEN trades well above its own five-year median, which means investors must weigh the upside against supply and customer-concentration risk. Ciena's premium multiple demands execution to offset these risks.
Ciena's 2027 growth case is hard to ignore, with management projecting revenues to grow at least 30% to between $8.3 billion and $8.4 billion. Adjusted gross margin is projected at 45%-46%, while adjusted operating margin is expected to reach 25%-27%. Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported $9.3 billion of fiscal 2026 AI infrastructure orders from hyperscalers, which Ciena hopes to capitalize on.
However, the premium multiple is slightly below the Zacks sub-industry's 36.3X but well above the Zacks Computer and Technology sector's 20.4X and the S&P 500's 19.7X. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), reflecting favorable earnings estimate-revision trends over the one- to three-month horizon.
