Circle Grabs Blockchain Patents Before Launch of Open Layer 1 Blockchain
Circle Internet Group has acquired more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents from IBM's blockchain portfolio. The deal was announced on July 27, but the terms were not disclosed.
The patents cover a range of areas including blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification, and secure cloud operations. This acquisition makes Circle the leading U.S. holder of blockchain patents.
This move by Circle is significant as it prepares to launch its open Layer 1 blockchain, Arc, on September 16, 2026. Arc has a founding validator cohort that includes major financial institutions such as BlackRock and Visa.
The acquisition of these patents suggests that Circle wants to control the legal and technical ground under Arc. The company has already raised $222 million in a presale of ARC tokens, valuing the network at $3 billion.
