Cisco Patches Seven Critical Vulnerabilities in IOS XR Operating System

Cisco has released security patches to address seven vulnerabilities in its IOS XR operating system, which is used in carrier-grade networking infrastructures and high-demand telecommunications environments. The vulnerabilities pose potential risks for remote code execution, unauthorized access, and disruption of critical network devices.

The two most serious cases concern CVE-2026-20274 and CVE-2026-20279, which are associated with problems in the management and lifecycle of operating system resources. Issues include inadequate certificate validation, incorrect authorization mechanisms, use of resources after they have been freed, access outside of allowed memory limits, and unsafe resource initialization.

The remaining five vulnerabilities have scores ranging from 8.2 to 8.8, with problems related to buffer overflows and underflows, incorrect calculations, inadequate handling of exceptional conditions, and weaknesses in execution flow control.

Cisco recommends that customers check their operating system version via the 'show version' command and proceed with the available fixes. Organizations should also restrict administrative access, check ACLs, implement network segmentation, and monitor for unusual changes in settings.
