Cisco Systems has made a strong case that it is at the center of a significant technology shift, driven by increasing demand for AI infrastructure and networking services.

The company's product chief, Jeetu Patel, and CFO, Mark Patterson, presented their argument at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference on September 8. They pointed to data showing that AI agents have recently overtaken humans in raw consumption on one major platform, with agent token usage running roughly five times human levels.

Cisco's own research has shown that AI agents consume more bandwidth than traditional tools, with each task generating 450% more traffic. The company believes this trend will continue to drive growth, with over $100 billion of upgrade and refresh opportunities emerging from equipment reaching the end of life.
