Cisco, Sophos, WatchGuard Dominate Next-Gen Firewall Market for SMBs

The next-generation firewall market is dominated by three vendors in the sub-$50,000 hardware bracket: Cisco Secure Firewall, Sophos Firewall (the XGS line), and WatchGuard Firebox. These firewalls are chosen by buyers who need a product that can be operated by a generalist IT admin without requiring a high level of technical expertise or a large security budget.

Cisco Secure Firewall earns its spot due to its installed base, with organizations already running Cisco switching and routing gravitating towards it for single-vendor support contracts and Cisco Talos threat intelligence. Sophos Firewall is also popular, consistently topping G2's seasonal firewall rankings, and offering Synchronized Security integration with Sophos endpoint agents.

The three firewalls differ in their architecture features, management consoles, and pricing models. Cisco Secure Firewall has a Snort 3 IPS engine and FXOS chassis management on its 3100/4200 series appliances. Sophos Firewall offers Synchronized Security and Post-Quantum IPS since July 2026. WatchGuard Firebox has Total Security Suite bundles AV, IPS, APT Blocker, and DNSWatch in one SKU.

The throughput numbers for each vendor's firewalls vary, with Cisco Secure Firewall offering up to 16 Gbps rate limit on its virtual appliances, Sophos Firewall reaching 76 Gbps NGFW and 190 Gbps raw firewall on its XGS 8500 appliance, and WatchGuard Firebox achieving 8 Gbps firewall throughput.
