Cisco Unveils Switch That Can Connect Different Quantum Computers
Cisco Systems has made a significant breakthrough in its quest to connect quantum computers of different kinds. The company has developed a switching chip that can translate between various approaches used by researchers, including those using rubidium atoms and superconductors.
The switch works at room temperature and uses standard telecommunications fiber-optic cables, making it a crucial step towards creating an internet of quantum machines. Vijoy Pandey, senior vice president and general manager of Outshift, said that this technology will allow researchers to 'speak any language' and combine their strengths.
The immediate applications of Cisco's switch are expected to be in security, where it can connect multiple quantum sensors together to detect even the slightest eavesdropping attempts. Jeetu Patel, Cisco's president and chief product officer, said that this could lead to a significant change in defense posture against hackers and AI agents.
