Cisco, a leading networking hardware company, has been at the forefront of building and connecting machines for decades. However, with the rise of AI, its role is evolving to become a critical component in scaling this technology.

The shift towards AI is often seen as a battle for powerful processors, data centers, and electricity to run them. But, as AI moves from experiments into enterprise systems, networks are becoming a major constraint on how quickly companies can scale the technology.

Cisco's India operations play a significant role in this transition, with over 9,000 R&D engineers working across various disciplines, including hardware, networking, silicon, security, and AI. According to Daisy Chittilapilly, Cisco's India & South Asia president, AI is a defining moment, and the machines starting talking will change everything.

The challenge lies in handling massive amounts of data generated by AI agents working constantly. These agents can create 450% or more additional traffic on the underlying network, making it essential to have robust networks that can handle low latency and high throughput requirements. Chittilapilly emphasizes that the urgency of this work is evident when considering that almost half of the world's infrastructure is either aged or ageing.

Cisco is addressing this challenge by developing its own application-specific chips, including Silicon One, which is being adapted for AI environments. The company has manufacturing operations in Chennai, producing finished routers and switches for global markets.
