Cloud Giants Bet $4 Trillion on AI Infrastructure Boom
The tech industry is witnessing an unprecedented infrastructure buildout as major cloud platforms bet heavily on AI demand. UBS estimates that hyperscalers will spend around $4.1 trillion from 2026 through 2028, more than three times the amount spent over the previous six years. This spending boom is not just a result of growing demand, but also reflects the aggressive recycling of cloud revenue into AI infrastructure.
The big four cloud companies - Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms - account for the largest portions of the buildout, with SpaceX making up for lost time. New entrants like Oracle, neocloud providers, and Nebius Group are also expanding their spending pool. The cumulative estimates for 2026-2028 show a staggering $938 billion for Alphabet, $683 billion for Meta Platforms, and $672 billion for Microsoft.
The industry's capital requirements may be reset at a permanently higher level due to AI demand. While there is a risk of overspending without adequate returns, the scale of commitment from multiple customers reduces this risk. The winners will not necessarily be the companies spending the most but those turning that unprecedented spending into the highest returns on capital.
UBS's numbers suggest that major cloud platforms are betting heavily that AI demand will become large enough to keep infrastructure productive for years. Smart investors should follow the money and favor companies positioned to monetize the buildout rather than simply finance it.
