Cloud Titans Soar as Big Tech's AI Winners Emerge
Big Tech's earnings season has highlighted the importance of AI investment in determining company valuations. The six largest listed tech companies saw their market value fluctuate by over $2 trillion this week, with cloud giants Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet rising while Apple, Meta, and Tesla slipped.
Microsoft's market value increased by more than $600 billion after the company reported strong cloud growth. Amazon also saw its market value rise by over $400 billion, despite a 15% stock gain this week. The company lifted its expected capital expenditures for the year to $220 billion.
Amazon's cloud business posted 37% year-over-year growth in the second quarter, its best performance since 2021, according to Forrester principal analyst Tracy Woo. 'AWS's strong growth is a clear indicator that its infrastructure investments are meeting market demand rather than outpacing it,' she said.
Apple and Meta took a hit, with Apple's stock down more than 7% after the company beat analyst expectations but gave a cautious outlook due to supply constraints. Tesla's market cap fell by roughly $7 billion after the company posted negative cash flow and projected higher spending.
