Coca-Cola-Backed Centre Sets New Benchmark for Circular Economy in Sri Lanka

The Coca-Cola-backed Somerset Eco Material Collection and Processing Centre (MCPC) in Sri Lanka's plantation sector is setting a new benchmark for the circular economy. This initiative, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, combines renewable energy, plastic recycling, community livelihoods, and environmental conservation to create a sustainable model.

Located at Somerset Estate in Radella, the MCPC is powered entirely by hydropower from a nearby small-scale plant on the Nanu Oya River. This facility demonstrates how waste recovery can be linked with clean energy and inclusive economic development.

The centre processes around three metric tonnes of plastic bottles each month, supporting the livelihoods of more than 10 informal waste collectors. It also contributes to protecting waterways and the upstream watershed by diverting plastic waste from the environment.

Mario Perera, Country Head, Sri Lanka and Maldives, The Coca-Cola Company, emphasized the importance of bringing communities and the waste collection ecosystem together. Talawakelle Tea Estates Managing Director Dr. Roshan Rajadurai highlighted the company's commitment to renewable energy, circular waste management, and community empowerment.
