Coca-Cola Expands Beverage Portfolio Through Acquisitions and New Brand Launches
Coca-Cola is one of the most recognizable brand names worldwide, first created in 1886 and available in over 200 countries by the mid-20th century. Beyond its iconic soda, the company has grown to own numerous individual beverage brands.
Some popular brands owned by Coca-Cola include Fanta, Sprite, and Schweppes, which many people are aware belong under the company's umbrella. However, there are other lesser-known brands that Coca-Cola owns, including Costa Coffee, acquired for $5.1 billion in 2018 to enter the hot beverage market.
Coca-Cola has also expanded into the wellness beverage market with its high-protein ultra-filtered creamy milk brand, Fairlife, which it fully acquired in January 2020 after initially owning a minority stake. Another acquisition was Glaceau (Energy Brands, Inc.), the company behind Vitaminwater, purchased by Coca-Cola for $4.1 billion in 2007.
In addition to these acquisitions, Coca-Cola has launched several brands within its portfolio, such as Gold Peak and Simply Orange. The former was introduced in 2006 to expand the company's reach in the still beverage space, particularly in the tea market, while the latter was created in 2001 to compete with Pepsi's Tropicana brand.
Coca-Cola has also had a long history of competition with PepsiCo, which led to the release of Dasani mineral-enhanced water in 1999 to directly compete with Aquafina. Another brand within Coca-Cola's portfolio is Fresca, launched in 1964 as a zero-calorie, caffeine-free fizzy drink that became popular as a mixer.
