Coca-Cola Foundation Powers Sri Lankan Facility with Hydro Energy
The Coca-Cola Foundation has partnered with local organizations to establish a hydro-powered facility in Sri Lanka that sets a new benchmark for circular economy. The Somerset Eco Material Collection and Processing Centre (MCPC) is powered entirely by hydropower from a nearby small-scale plant on the Nanu Oya River.
This innovative facility offers a model for linking waste recovery with clean energy and inclusive economic development. It processes approximately three metric tonnes of plastic bottles each month, supporting the livelihoods of over 10 informal waste collectors.
The centre also has significance beyond recycling, as it protects waterways and the upstream watershed by diverting plastic waste collected from nearby communities.
Mario Perera, Country Head of The Coca-Cola Company in Sri Lanka and Maldives, said 'The Somerset Eco MCPC demonstrates that sustainability is most powerful when communities and waste collection ecosystems come together.'
