Coca-Cola Japan has started selling label-free bottled mineral water through some Tokyo vending machines as part of an effort to reduce plastic waste.

According to a recent change to a ministerial ordinance, manufacturers can now sell label-free beverages individually rather than only by the case.

The Japan Soft Drink Association estimates that removing labels from bottled water sold through the country's roughly 2 million vending machines could reduce plastic consumption by about 350 tons annually.

Coca-Cola Japan said it may expand this approach to other beverages in the future.
