Coca-Cola Outpaces Peers as Strongest Consumer Staples Stock
Coca-Cola has taken the top spot among consumer staples stocks in terms of growth, according to Seeking Alpha's latest quantitative rankings. The beverage giant surpassed Costco, Walmart, PepsiCo, and Procter & Gamble in the ranking, which is significant because investors often turn to staples for defensive earnings.
Coca-Cola earned a B growth grade, the highest among the sector's 10 largest holdings. Monster Beverage and Costco followed with B- grades, while Philip Morris scored C+ and Mondelez received a C. At the bottom of the list were PepsiCo, Altria, Colgate-Palmolive, and Procter & Gamble, all receiving D or D+ grades.
The company's lead is backed by improving fundamentals, including 7% net revenue growth to $13.4 billion in the second quarter. Organic revenue increased 6%, global unit-case volume climbed 5%, and comparable EPS advanced 11% to $0.97. Comparable operating margin expanded to 35.6% from 34.7% a year earlier.
Coca-Cola raised its full-year outlook, expecting roughly 5% organic revenue growth, up from its previous 4% to 5% range, while comparable EPS is projected to increase 9% to 10%. Free cash flow is expected to reach approximately $12.4 billion.
