Coca-Cola's AI-Generated Controversy Continues
Coca-Cola has been at the center of controversy again after its 'Share a Coke' campaign allowed customers to create custom labels. However, the company's screening software was found to be biased against certain words and phrases.
In 2021, CNN documented that the software refused to allow labels with 'Black Lives Matter' but permitted those with 'White Lives Matter.' Similar issues arose in 2024 when Snopes tested the page and found that it rejected religious and political names across the board.
However, this time around, no outsider was needed to expose the issue. The machine itself was responsible for allowing phrases like 'Pedophile Pride' and 'God is Dead' while rejecting 'Jesus is Lord.'
Coca-Cola's excuse has remained the same: that it is due to a technical issue affecting the personalization preview tool, with all orders subject to moderation review after submission.
