Coca-Cola's Kinley Tries to Rebuild Trust in India's Bottled Water Market
India's organized packaged drinking water market is a high-volume, low-differentiation category dominated by distribution reach rather than product distinction. The top three national brands, Bisleri, Kinley, and Aquafina, control more than half of the organized volumes, while roughly 45% of the market remains fragmented across regional and unbranded players.
Kinley, owned by Coca-Cola, has consistently occupied the number-two national position with reported shares ranging from approximately 19.5% to 28%. Despite a stable number-two position behind Bisleri, Kinley has struggled to differentiate itself in a market where purification technology is broadly comparable across major organized players.
The brand's core product claim has centered on a '10-step purification process' since its introduction in India in 2000. However, Coca-Cola undertook a re-branding campaign for Kinley in 2008 with a 'Spirit of Purity' platform, which included redesigned packaging and a purity-centered brand narrative.
In 2022, Kinley launched the 'Boond Boond Mein Vishwas' ('Trust in Every Drop') campaign, partnering with former Indian national cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador. The campaign aimed to reinforce trust as the brand's central emotional and functional equity, leveraging Dhoni's trustworthy personality to align with Kinley's own positioning around purity and safety.
