Coca-Cola's Quiet Impact on Nigeria: 7 Ways the Company is Making a Difference
Coca-Cola has been a part of everyday life in Nigeria for 75 years. But its impact goes beyond just providing drinks, as it has invested heavily in sustainability efforts, economic empowerment programs, humanitarian support, and consumer engagement initiatives.
One of the company's key focus areas is water stewardship. Through the Strengthening Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (S-WASH) program, Coca-Cola has helped to bring clean water to communities that need it most. In Borno State, the project has fixed up boreholes and installed handwashing stations in six communities, including an IDP camp, two health facilities, and a school. This has benefited over 16,000 people.
The company is also working to address plastic waste by empowering collectors through programs like Empowering Collectors Initiative, Plastics Recycling Programme (PReP), CyclePlast, Tidy Nigeria, and Green Campus. These initiatives have helped to pull tonnes of plastic waste out of the environment while providing a steady income for thousands of Nigerians.
Coca-Cola's presence in Nigeria has also had a significant economic impact, supporting thousands of direct jobs and hundreds of thousands of indirect livelihoods across manufacturing, logistics, packaging, retail, transportation, recycling, and distribution networks nationwide. The company has built one of the country's most extensive distribution networks powered by indigenous entrepreneurs and retailers.
