As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly writes software code across the technology industry, there's been growing concern among students and potential developers about the future of programming skills. Microsoft recently addressed these concerns by stating that learning to code remains important despite AI's rapid rise in software development.

The company's training and certification platform, Microsoft Learn, acknowledged that AI tools are generating a significant amount of code, with estimates suggesting that 20% to 30% of the code in Microsoft repositories is generated by AI. In fact, Microsoft's chief technology officer, Kevin Scott, predicted that all code will be generated by AI by 2030.

However, this shift towards AI-generated code doesn't mean that human developers are becoming obsolete. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, 75% of new code at Google has been created using AI and approved by engineers. This development requires developers to have a deeper understanding of the system and problem-solving skills rather than just memorizing programming syntax.

Microsoft Learn continues to provide free structured learning paths covering programming languages and technologies including Python, C#, and cloud development. The company's message is clear: coding remains relevant, but how developers use their programming skills is changing as AI becomes a larger part of software development.
