Coinbase Brings Traditional Stocks onto Blockchain with Tokenized Shares
Coinbase has launched tokenized versions of US stocks on its Base blockchain, allowing eligible investors outside the US to trade shares onchain. The initial offering includes Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet, with each token backed by a corresponding stock held by regulated broker and custodian Alpaca.
The tokens are transferable between wallets without whitelists and can be traded 24/7 on supported onchain platforms. Coinbase issues the tokens under the Abu Dhabi Global Market's regulatory framework and plans to add more stocks as demand grows.
This move adds to a growing effort by financial firms to bring traditional assets onto blockchains, advancing crypto adoption, onchain DeFi liquidity, and regulated custody for traditional assets.
