Coke Cans Catch Fire for Biased Personalization
Coca-Cola has come under fire for its personalized can feature, which allows customers to create custom messages on their cans. A recent test revealed that the system appears to be inconsistent in what it blocks and what it allows.
The analysis showed that mainstream religious phrases like 'Jesus is Lord' and political slogans like 'Make America Great' are blocked, while left-wing activism and certain right-wing group names are permitted. Additionally, anti-religious phrasing such as 'God is Dead' was not flagged by the system.
When it comes to political phrases, similar results were found. Patriotic or right-leaning slogans like 'Make America Great' are not allowed on personalized Coke cans, but left-wing political slogans like 'Defund the Police' are acceptable.
Coca-Cola has stated that they created the Share A Coke personalization tool for fans to celebrate with one another and make connections by creating bottles and cans with special names or phrases on them. However, the company has acknowledged a technical issue affecting the personalization preview tool and is working to address it.
