Colder, Shorter Wash Cycles Slash Fabric Wear and Pollution
A new study published in Dyes & Pigments found that using colder and shorter wash cycles can significantly reduce fabric wear and tear, as well as microfiber pollution. Researchers from the University of Leeds and Procter & Gamble conducted a comprehensive analysis of washing machine performance on various fabrics.
The study focused on t-shirts made by brands like Gildan, Russell, and Hanes, using different wash temperatures and cycle lengths to measure color loss and dye transfer. The results showed that colder and shorter cycles reduced shed microfibers and transferred dyes.
Procter & Gamble funded the research as part of its efforts to promote its cold-water detergents. However, the study's findings are based on scientific evidence and not just a marketing push. According to the researchers, using colder and shorter wash cycles can also reduce waste soap and carbon footprint.
